The David & Jonathan is a jewel; thanks for the introduction. The 2 of them wrote quite a few pop classics and no doubt made a mountain of cash when Coke bought I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing from them. As for their names, David and Jonathan were arguably the first well-documented gay couple in the Bible, however much straightwashing has ensued during different eras.
Is it a harpsichord on Lovers of the World Unite or a twelve string? What ever it is it certainly gives it that Byrds / Searchers feel. Wished I’d paid more attention to Gregson over the years, an interesting minor career. The guy that owned my record shop of choice back in the late 70’s introduced me to Any Trouble. Washington is underrated.
I'm 95% sure that's a harpsichord (and was 100% before you sowed the seeds of doubt.) For one thing, I'm hearing a lower register line set against the upper register part in the intro. Yeah, Clive Gregson is not a major artist, but he's a consistently enjoyable one. I loved his partnership with Christine Collister (a fabulous singer). And there are many days I'll take Dinah Washington over any other jazz singer for her combination of technique with expression.
I always enjoy this quinttake by you; thanks for sharing. Dinah Washington is my Billie Holiday, substituting a little Chicago for Kansas City. A nice quint would be New Blowup Blues, Soulville, September In The Rain, Fat Daddy, and Baby, You've Got What It Takes.
